By the late 1760s, there was broad support among Americans for an expulsion of British troops from America and a return to what had been the status quo prior to the French and Indian War. The British crown also increased its military presence in America, often forcing American families to provide food and lodging for British soldiers in their own homes, and at their own expense. Following the French and Indian War, which lasted from 1754 to 1763, the British Empire began to tighten controls over its American colonies, instituting heavy taxes (most infamously the Stamp Act of 1765). In 2006, he was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States highest civilian award. He was a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.
